Aboriginal Financial Officers Association - HR Conference - June 4th, 2025

Step Into AI: From Awareness to Action

This introductory session supports Indigenous Nations and HR leaders in understanding the risks, opportunities, and responsibilities that come with AI adoption. Participants explore the fundamentals of tools like ChatGPT, with a focus on how AI can support policy development, recruitment, communication, and organizational efficiency. The session includes real-world examples, guided demonstrations, and frameworks for evaluating AI tools in line with Nation values, data sovereignty, and ethical governance. Designed to spark critical thinking and cultural alignment, this session helps leaders begin shaping AI strategies that are transparent, human-led, and rooted in community priorities

I lived in Vancouver for 15 years before I moved back to Vancouver Island, I have been at events at most of the hotels and conference centers but I have never been in a room so beautiful as the one at the AFOA-BC HR Confernece. I am not sure who the staging company was, but it was stunning! Speaking to 70+ attendees, who came from Indigenous Nations (many rural and remote) throughout BC, about AI, the AI Freight Train and the impact it will have on their communities.

Thank you to Wendy Ham and Candise Johnston for all of their hard work putting on this conference. A speicalist shout out to my long time friend Billy-Joe Cheko for the introduction.
